Army Veteran's First Christmas as a Civilian

Updated: December 21, 2008
A Lubbock grandmother's Christmas wish comes true. Her favorite grandson is home for the holidays after serving the last few years in Iraq.  Donnie Dorman served six years in the army as a helicopter mechanic. Two and a half of those years were spent deployed in Baghdad. And, that meant he was away for three family Christmases.  Holidays, he says, were clouded with sadness because his family always knew it was just a matter of time before he would leave again, but this Christmas is different.  Dorman ended his military service in the fall, and his family says knowing he never has to leave them again, is the greatest gift ever.

B.J. Dorman, the veteran's wife say, "He's not going back.  He's mine for good now. I don't have to share him with the army anymore and I'm very excited about that."  His grandmother, Evelyn Mattison adds, "I'm extremely proud of him for his service to the military, and now they'll be in the area.  Amarillo is closer much closer than Iraq."

Dorman now has a job in Amarillo repairing helicopters.  He's the third generation in his family to serve in the military.
