Big changes could be coming to the Texas house as state representatives look to elect a new House Speaker.

The current speaker Tom Craddick has bowed out of the running, leaving San Antonio representative Joe Straus up for the position.  Our local representative Delwin Jones says that it's good news because Straus will help take care of our local issues.

"As soon as we get Straus officially elected, then I anticipate working close with him to look after rural issues, look after Texas Tech, look after the med school...and just in general be one of his primary advisors."

Straus says he has at least 95 of the 150 House members on his side.  He only needs 76 votes to seal the seat.  The vote is January 13th, the first day of the 2009 legislative session.
