Some families in West Texas are being forced to flee their homes after wildfires destroyed eight homes.

Authorities are evacuating residents in Jones County near Abilene.  Firefighters say the nearly 5800 acre fire is threatening homes in the area.  Earlier today, the Texas Forest Service said it was more than 50% contained, but strong winds and warm temperatures could make it more difficult.

Now our own Lubbock Fire Department is warning our area to be careful with the dry grass and windy conditions.

"We don't have the hills and trees and everything that they have in that are that causes a lot of those problems to that extent but we do have a lot of big large grassy areas in our community that could just as easily like it has down there if we're not careful."

So far, no injuries have been reported.  The cause of the fire is still unknown.
