State Trooper Shoots Lubbock Man During High-Speed Chase

           Around 9:30 Saturday night a Lubbock patrol officer tried to stop 34-year-old Lonnie Eugene Poole for reckless driving near 50th and Avenue Q.  Instead of stopping, Poole took off and got on I-27 headed southbound. Poole eventually got on a dirt road off the interstate and it was there that the officer lost sight of him, but just a few minutes later DPS Trooper Troy McKee spotted Poole and continued the chase.  Witnesses say Poole was weaving in and out of traffic and running other drivers off the road.  Officials say the truck finally got stuck at 114th and Upland, and when McKee tried to get Poole out of the car, the suspect reversed the truck into the trooper and his cruiser.  At that time, McKee opened fire on Poole, shooting several rounds into the driver's side of the truck, but Poole just took off again.

           Nearly an hour later and more than twenty miles from where police initially tried to pull Poole over, the chase ended on HWY 114, three miles west of Smyer.  A Hockley County Deputy rammed the truck off the road and ordered Poole out of the vehicle at gunpoint.  Witnesses say he had at least one gunshot wound to the leg,  After officers read him his rights, he was rushed to a local hospital for treatment for the non-life threatening injuries. 
           A background check reveals Poole has been arrested numerous times in the past for everything from resisting arrest to aggravated robbery, but he did not have any active warrants out at the time of the chase so, it's unclear why he ran from police.   The Texas Rangers and DPS officials are still investigating the chase and shooting.  We'll have more details for you on Monday.
