Salmonella In a Plainview Plant

A local peanut plant shut down after salmonella is found in its products. The Food and Drug Administration is testing more samples from the Peanut Corporation of America's Plainview plant today. That plant operated without a license for almost four years, until the Deparmtent of Health came in for an inspection of the plant last week and took samples of products to test in labs. The Peanut Corporation of America tested their own samples as well and theirs came back positive for salmonella. The plant is now closed, leaving dozens of workers without a job. "There's also always other businesses such as trucking businesses and drivers and so forth that are associated with that business and so all of it will affect us," says Plainview Chamber of Commerce's Dee Blevins.
The products affected by the bacteria were granulated peanuts and peanut meal. They were not shipped out of Plainview's plant. Dry roasted peanuts were also affected and shipped to a distributor in Michigan, but were detained before reaching consumers.
