A Deadly Labor Day Weekend on the Road

The Department of Public Safety says they always expect trouble on the road this past Labor Day weekend, like many other holiday weekends. So, troopers started patrolling heavily Friday. However, they say having four people die on the roads in a matter of about twenty-four hours is a pretty significant number. DPS troopers say the first fatal accident involved a motorcycle driver, who was killed on Farm Road 168 near Lamb County on Sunday. Troopers say forty-eight year old Ronnie Mac Hill tried to make a U-turn when an oncoming Mustang hit him and was thrown from his motorcycle. He wasnt wearing a helmet. The second accident happened around 4:45 on Monday evening. DPS Troopers say a pick up truck went off the road and rolled over. It then crashed into a corn field just south of Plainview. Two adults and three children were ejected from the car. The adults died and the three kids, ages four, seven, and eight, were flown to Covenant Medical Center. DPS troopers say the kids were not wearing their seatbelts. The third accident happened just before midnight Monday. DPS troopers say twenty-four year old Olga Mejia was driving her SUV down Interstate 27, just two miles outside of Abernathy. They say she was passing a semi truck when she sideswiped it and her car rolled over several times. Her passenger twenty-one year old Manual Vascas was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the car. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Mejia was flown to UMC. DPS troopers say they are investigating whether alcohol was a factor in both of Monday’s wrecks. "Any amount can influence anybody. You have to that into consideration. Just because you consume alcohol on a regular basis, you form tolerances, but then again, when was the last time you slept, when was the last time you ate, how long of a distance are you driving,” says Corporal Gonzalez of the Department of Public Safety. As of Monday, the children involved in the Plainview accident were in stable condition.
