Billions of dollars in the federal budget have been set aside for alternative energy production, and Lubbock's hoping to cash in and expand wind energy programs here in the South Plains. Professors at Texas Tech's Wind Science and Engineering Research Center are busy writing grant proposals. They hope to bring some federal funds into the Hub to increase wind energy production and wind engineering jobs.
"Our research facilities are some of the top in the United States. So we think it's smart for the Department of Energy and our country to leverage the things that we already have here at the university with some more funding," says Tech Instructor Richard Walker.
The South Plains is at the heart of one of the greatest wind sources in the world.
