After a deadly fire in west Lubbock Monday night, fire officials say a smoke detector could have been the difference between life and death. Fire officials say smoke detectors are vitally important to have in your home. They're cheap, easy to install, and could save your life.

Lubbock couple Dean and Sharon merrifield lost their home to a fire back in 200, but they say they wouldn't be alive today if not for their smoke alarm. "I don't think we would have made it out in time, we would have been injured, if not killed by the flames."

Garett Nelson of the Lubbock Fire Marshal's Office says, "The fire that we had this week, it was life or death, it may not happen in your house tonight, but what if it does? It's life or death."
