More than a dozen moms and dads are behind bars after skipping out on child support. Officers spent Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning arresting 17 people who are late on child support payments. All together, they owe more than $350,000. Sheriff David Gutierrez believes a night in jail may encourage these parents to pay up.
"We're hoping this will send a message to other parents that they do have a responsibility to their children. They need to make arrangements to pay child support if they are delinquent, otherwise they will see us," says Gutierrez.
The Sheriff's Office averages four child support round up's a year, but they'd like to increase that number to five or six.
