Today is World Autism Awareness Day, and here in Lubbock, folks at Texas Tech are working hard to improve the quality of life for autistic students. At the Burkhart Center for Autism Education and Research, autistic students learn both social skills and job skills at what they call "The Transition Academy."

It's exactly what they need to function in the real world, and instructors do their best to set up students with part-time jobs. Says Director Janice Magness, "Once you have autism, you have it for the rest of your life, so we're trying to teach these students how to cope with that and how to function and participate in the real world."
