Ten years ago, 13 students were killed by two of their peers in Columbine High School.  Today, that event has changed campus security across the nation, and here in Lubbock.

Columbine held remembrance ceremonies throughout the day in honor of the 13 killed.  Back here at home, local schools were affected by that day as well.  LISD Police Chief Thomas Nichols says immediately after that tragic event, our district worked to beef up security.  Now he says, their main goal is prevention, but they're also prepared for the worst.

"Our number one goal is deterrence.  However, should something happen we as an individual department the school district police have the ability for an immediate response and obviously we're right in the middle of the city of Lubbock and they're also capable of an immediate response."

All city high schools have random checks with the metal detector wands, and every LISD campus is equipped with surveillance cameras.
