A small part of this year's $787-billion stimulus package will soon be coming to Lubbock to help local law enforcement agencies better serve the public. Cpt. Greg Stevens says the police department and the sheriff's office are getting a stimulus grant in the amount of 1.1 million dollars. He says a large chunk of the money will go toward funding for the Lubbock Children's Advocacy Center, and Victims' Advocates Services. Then, the city will spend their portion on upgrading their out-of-date patrol car dash-cam system that still uses VHS. Stevens says getting stimulus money is all about showing you would spend it in ways that will help save or create jobs.   He says, "Those are relatively apparent.  Whenever you're buying technology ... everything we purchase and is going to this program is from American companies and produced here in the U.S. so, it's pretty apparent how that process comes through."
The sheriff's office has not released details yet on how they'll be spending their portion of the grant. Stevens says he has also applied for another $250,000 in stimulus money that would be used by the LPD narcotics division.
