Texas Tech wind researchers are gearing up to take part in the largest tornado study in history. 19 Texas Tech students and professors will join more than 50 researchers from around the country, for the "VORTEX2" project. It stands for "Verification Of Rotation in Tornadoes EXperiment."

Researchers will use advanced equipment to study 'tornadic information' that will ultimately be used to protect people from storms.

VORTEX 2 principle investigator Dr. Chris Weiss says, "The end result of the project, we hope, is to better understand why super cell thunderstorms produce tornadoes, and that will give us an increased warning lead time, certainly, which will help us save lives, and it will also help us reduce the false alarm rate on these tornado warnings."
