(Berlin, Germany) -- After playing to a 1-1 draw in regulation and overtime, Italy defeated France 5-3 in penalty kicks to win the 2006 World Cup soccer tournament.
French captain Zinedine Zidane gave France an early 1-0 lead on a penalty kick, but was later ejected in extra time for head-butting Italy`s Marco Materazzi.
Twelve minutes later, Materazzi`s header found the back of the net to even the game at a goal apiece.
France`s David Trezeguet missed his penalty kick to allow the Italians to take the advantage.
Fabio Grosso booted the final knock to give Italy its fourth World Cup title and its first since 1982.
