A 14-year-old is fighting for his life tonight after being struck by a car in Southwest Lubbock.

The accident happened just before 5 at the intersection of 79th and Slide. Witnesses tell us the traffic light there had just turned yellow, and as the truck continued through the light, the boy ran into the street, and was hit. His friends ran to a nearby fire station for help and that team was able to stabilize him.

He was taken to University Medical Center in critical condition. However, family friends tell us his condition has improved tonight.

Police are investigating this as an accident, and no charges have been filed against the driver.

Sgt. Phil Johnson, Lubbock Police Department: "We're unable to tell right now if he was crossing against the light, or if the truck that struck him ran the light, so we're still trying to figure that out as well."

We'll keep you updated on the boy's condition.
