It's an anniversary most people in Lubbock want to forget, but the massive tornado that leveled much of downtown and North Lubbock brings about some vivid memories for some.

Monday marks 39 years since an F5 tornado dropped from the sky, killing 26 people.

Lubbock resident Brenda Shugart survived May 11, 1970.

She was in second grade, but recalls the tornado in detail.

"It was coming directly for where we were and we really hustled to get in there, but when we got in there it hit almost instantly. You just never forget it, you never do, and you're always appreciative of the people that go out and chase them now," Shugart says.

The 1970 tornado, classified as an F5, is the only recorded tornado of its size across the South Plains.
