A deadly crash on Tuesday killed a young child and officials are urging parents to buckle up your kids. Officials say the 3 year old that died Tuesday was not wearing a seat belt or strapped in a car seat. UMC ER Director Dr. Joe Sasin says car seats can make the difference between life and death.
"The car seat provides a crash cushion for the child." says Sasin.
Experts say the odds of a child or baby dying in an car crash drop by 75% if children are buckled into a car seat.
Here are some tips to follow:
The seat belt needs to be low and across the hips, not across the stomach.
It should go across the chest but away from the neck.
Also try to cut down or secure loose objects rolling around in the car like phones or other items. They can become deadly projectiles in a crash.
