A bill that could make Texas Tech one of the top research universities in the state has passed the Texas House and Senate.
Texas Tech is just one of seven state universities vying for Tier 1 status.
This bill doesn't make Tech a Tier 1 school, instead it would provide the university with funding to attract more research in order to eventually achieve that status.
"It really does create opportunities for us to achieve Tier 1 status. It creates a matching fund and that matching fund will help us get to Tier 1 status and it identifies a fund which will help us sustain excellence once we get there," Texas Tech President, Dr. Guy Bailey says.
Right now, Texas has three Tier 1 universities, the University of Texas at Austin, Texas A&M and Rice University.
