The Lubbock Police Department is getting it's annual make over. Every year the department gets some upgrades. Many officers are now driving new cars. The department usually replaces 30 to 40 cars a year. Also, every officer received a new radio system. That system is being rebanded to decrease interference and improve communications.
Chief Thomas Esparza says the radio improvements benefit both the officers and the public, "It's more of an officer safety issue. The officers have to be able to communicate with each other and back to the dispatch, without interference because it could be a life or death situation. "
So while the old radios are not being replace but rather upgraded, the old cars are stripped and auctioned off.
