Car theft is one of lubbock's most common crimes, so this month, officials are trying to help you keep a closer eye on your car.

The South Plans Auto Theft Task Force has proclaimed July as  Watch Your Car month.  The idea is to get the word out about ways to avoid auto theft.

Experts say to always keep personal items out of sight, lock your car, and most importantly always take your keys with you.  If not, the Kat Anderson of the Task Force says you never know where your car could end up and what it might be used for.

"They take it for drugs, they take it for human smuggling, they take it for parts.  So you're perpetuating other crimes, just by leaving your keys in there," Anderson said.
