Text messages about a missing child alerted residents across the country last week. But the Amber Alert was a hoax and no one is funding it funny.

The cell phone text messages say a three-year-old girl was abducted by someone in a silver pickup truck and included the license plate number. Many people say they took it seriously and forwarded it on to everyone they know.

Officials say real Amber Alerts will never come through a text message.
