The historic Main Street bricks are coming up for the start of downtown revitalization. City workers started with Avenue O to Avenue Q on Main Street, tearing up the brick and laying asphalt.
Now some Lubbockites are upset about the history and nostalgia of the brick roads being thrown away but others say those roads have been deteorating for years. Mayor Tom Martin says the decision was made by the Council a few years back to do away with the brick. He thinks the citizens will see the asphalt is much more efficient.
"I think that as we replace those with new asphaltic pavement, and have a smooth ride, I think it will help bring people to downtown Lubbock."
Historic Broadway and parts of Buddy Holly and Texas Avenue will not be repaved.
