One local police department has joined the fierce competition for federal stimulus money all in the name of public safety.
The Slaton Police Department applied for assistance through the COPS Hiring Recovery Program.
It's a one billion dollar grant program which provides funding directly to law enforcement agencies to create jobs.
More than 7,000 police departments across the country have applied for the money, but Slaton officers argue smaller departments like theirs desperately need the funds.
"A lot of times the bigger cities, they have people come to the smaller cities to do their crime because of the smaller forces," Lt. Rick Lewis says.
Slaton will find out if they were awarded the money by September 30th.
Lt. Lewis says they would use the money to hire one more officer.
