Slaton's Police Department is waiting on word from Washington, on whether they'll get money to expand their force. The department applied for federal funds this spring. Now they're waiting to see if they've been selected to be part of the national COPS Hiring Recovery Program. The government program set aside one bIllion dollars for cities looking to recruit more officers.

"The city, they don't have the funds to do some of the things and buy the proper equipment that we might need and every little bit that we get helps," says Lt. Rick Lewis with the Slaton Police Department.

Slaton would use the money to hire one more officer. They'll find out by September 30th if they're awarded the funding.
