Two post offices in the Lubbock area may be closing their doors by the end of the year.

On Monday, the Postal Regulatory Commission recommended that the U.S.P.S. close 700 of its post offices nationwide in order to cut costs and meet the demands of a tough economy.

The Freedom Station post office at 50th Street and Avenue L as well as the Downtown Station post office at 411 Avenue L are on that list.

The Postal Service has no plans to make any changes before September 30th, when the fiscal year ends.

The Postal Service released the following statement regarding the possibility of closing some of its offices:

"As you are aware, financial problems in our economy have been felt by the Postal Service as well in the past year.  Our goal is to cut $5.9 billion in costs while maintaining service with improved efficiencies of our operations.  We have had a significant loss of revenue and mail volume and are reviewing every facet of our operation.  No decision about the closing of any post office has been determined at this time."

The list of all post offices considered for closing is available at www.prc.gov.
