The Lubbock Independent School Board decided yesterday not to immediately implement changes brough about by a new Texas law.

The law allows for more flexibility when students choose electives.  The extra wiggle room comes from the elimination of some requirements in physicial education, health, and technology classes.

LISD Superintendent Dr. Karen Garza says flexibility is a good thing, but that Lubbock schools already have enough built in.

"We understand that the legislative intent to provide more flexibility particularly for some school districts. However, in our unique circumstance, down the road we may continue to require some of those courses because our students can get so many credits under the block schedule," Garza said.

Dr. Garza also said that the school will wait for more clarification from the Texas Board of Education before making any changes for next year.
