Texas Tech Chancellor Kent Hance remembers watching last year's big win with his granddaughter sitting next to him.
"When we scored the touchdown, I saw the student's run out there [onto the field.]. I was going 'Oh No'. I wasn't yelling and she was going crazy. She said, 'Granddaddy, we won, we won, we won!,'" recalls Hance.
It was a moment in college football history Hance says he won't soon forget. Ten months after the Crabtree catch seen and heard around the world, the Red Raiders head to Austin to take on the Longhorns. -and so do some of Tech's top officials.
"The Texas Tech-UT rivalry is intense. You know Mack Brown said a couple of years ago that they had three rivals and that's OU, A&M and Texas Tech," says Hance.
"I think from our perspective it's a great rivalry because they're a first class institution, always a great football team, they have a tremendous tradition," says Texas Tech President Dr. Guy Bailey.
For Tech's Athletic Director Gerald Myers it's all about respect, "We have so much respect for Texas. Texas is always good. they're good in every sport."
Hance along with Bailey and Myers will be in Austin Saturday to help cheer the Red Raiders to a victory. It's a game full of tradition and memories for these men who've followed Tech football for years.
"My knowledge of Tech football tradition is very old since my late father in law played here in 39, 40, and 41. Many of the same traditions you see here at games today go back that far. For example the Saddle Tramps and their role," says Bailey.
When it comes to the Tech-Texas game there's one tradition that stands out.
"We have a set of spurs that go to the winner and they're in my office right now and they told me this morning, the spurs said we want to stay in Lubbock," says Hance.
Of course, we want them to stay in Lubbock too. As the Red Raiders prepare for a rematch with Texas, here's to hoping those spurs will still be in Lubbock Monday morning.
Go Tech!
