Updated: November 9, 2007
Police chase down a bank robber within minutes after he held up a Plains Capital Bank branch Friday. "The original call came in to us at 11:44 am. The alarm came in at 11:46 am. Our officers were on the scene by 11:48 and the suspect was in custody by 11:50,” says Lieutenant Greg Stevens of the Lubbock Police Department. "The call came in to us very quickly and there were already police cars in the area and they were able to apprehend the offender,” says Lt. Stevens. Police say the offender, 30 year old Michael Paul Harris, went to the Plains Capital Bank on 15tth and Avenue J close to noon on Friday. They say he handed a teller a note, demanding money, but never showed a weapon. Police say Harris got away on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash. Police caught Harris just blocks from the bank. And police say location may have helped them catch Harris. “This is a serious call and its a priority call. It would be handled before any other calls. Its going to get more officers assigned to it and with the proximity to the Police Department, several officers can get here quickly and get the suspect in custody,” says Lt. Stevens. No one was hurt in Friday’s incident. Harris is in custody, held on robbery charges.
