This year's cotton harvest is well under way, and this crop is said to be one of the largest in South Plains History. 5.3 million bales are expected to be produced just from the local area.
Cotton experts say that if the South Plains was its own country, it would be the sixth largest cotton producer in the world.
The big crop means big bucks for Lubbock and the surrounding counties.
"This is going to have a direct impact om the farmers of over $2 billion," said Roger Haldenby, VP for Plains Cotton Growers. "And by the time we apply the traditional multipliers in the local economy, we'll have $6 or $7 billion dollars in the Lubbock and surrounding area economy."
