It's a big day for the Hub City. A person of former President Bush's stature doesn't come to Lubbock very often. In fact, President Bush hasn't visited Lubbock, at least in any official capacity, since he was Governor of Texas.
Our cameras were there this afternoon when President Bush stepped off a private plane at Lubbock Aero. The former President even gave a little wave. Mr. Bush is here to speak at a fund-raiser benefiting Lubbock Christian University.
L.C.U.'s President, Dr. Ken Jones, said the decision to invited former President Bush began almost two years ago, right after General Colin Powell spoke at a similar fund-raiser. Jones said he thinks bringing a person of Bush's stature to Lubbock sends a great example to L.C.U. students by giving them a first-hand example of leadership.
But Jones added, most importantly the evening is a way of saying thanks to those who support Lubbock Christian University.
"We wouldn't be here today if it were not for a lot of people that continue to help us and be friends to us so we're looking for ways to serve others. This is not about Lubbock Christian University receiving, it's about Lubbock Christian University giving," said Dr. Ken Jones, President of LCU.
The evening begins at 7 p.m. with a banquet dinner for about 900 guests, followed by former President Bush's presentation in the theater at 8 p.m.
