A very special graduation ceremony today for one of our hometown heroes.

Ramiro Hernandez is headed to Afghanistan on Monday for his third deployment with the US Air Force. But this time, he would have missed his December graduation from Lubbock Christian University.

Concerned that he wouldn't be able to walk across the stage, the folks at LCU decided he'd have his very own ceremony.

This morning, in front of a packed auditorium, Hernandez became the very first in his family to receive his diploma.

Ramiro Hernandez: "This is really gracious of LCU, they went a really long way to make this a really special occasion for me. The long hours really paid off.

Cathy Box, LCU Asst. Professor, Education: "I'm so proud of him, and I just hope he comes home safely."

Hernandez received his degree in education. He hopes to return to his wife and 2-year-old daughter after deployment, pick up where he left off teaching and coaching New Deal football.
