More Loop Construction on the Way

The City Council voted yesterday to fund another road construction project in Lubbock.
TXDOT plans to widen West Loop 289 from four to six lanes at 19th street. The project will also remove the cloverleaf interchange at that exit.
In all, the project will cost about $18 million. 6.5 million of that will be paid for by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, otherwise known as the stimulus package. The City will foot the other $11.5 million. "That intersection and the way it was designed no longer suits the amount of traffic that flows through there. So by going in there and redesigning that interchange, widening the loop, it's going to facilitate mobility in that area," Ascencio said.
TXDOT's Dianah Ascencio says the project will improve the flow of traffic.
