TXDOT says one of the key things is to get a substance called Meltdown 20 on the roads during the first sign of ice.  They say, that way, they can reduce the amount of snow or ice they'll have to plow later.  TXDOT says they prioritize roads in the 17 counties they cover.  They often start with the Loop and the Interstate, then move to State and U.S. highways, and finally, farm-to-market roads.  TXDOT says they always try to make sure the most traveled roadways are clear.

TXDOT says although their employees will be out in the cold, working hard, some of the road responsibility rests on the drivers as well.

"We're working as hard as we can to keep the roads as best we can.  But, it's still, if we get a really intense storm, wxpreps22007-12-07-1197087493.jpgthen the public is going to have to drive to the condition and that's really the most important message to get out there,” says Penny Mason, spokesperson for TXDOT.

TXDOT has some winter driving tips that can help you out there.  First, they say, you should winterize your car before you travel in bad weather.  In other words, make sure your car has been checked out and everything is working properly.  Second, TXDOT says you should drive with caution and don't speed.  Third, they say you should be extra careful on bridges and overpasses since they tend to freeze first.  And, finally, check road conditions before you head out.  You can call TXDOT toll free at (800) 452-9292.
