Pilot Light Safety

By: Amanda Salem
Updated: December 14, 2007

A Lubbock woman was sent to the hospital Thursday night because of an explosion after she tried to light the pilot on her water heater.  The fire department says they responded to that woman's home around ten Thursday night.  And they say there was a gas build up near her water heater.  So, when she sparked her lighter, the gas blew up, leaving her with first degree burns to her face.

Experts say there are some things you can do to make sure you stay safe during the winter months.  They say when lighting your pilot light, first, make sure your thermostat is down; that way it won't start up while you're trying to light the pilot.  Next, check to see if there is any gas present.  If you smell a rotten egg-like smell, it is most likely not safe to light the pilot light.  Then, turn off any power associated with your appliance.  Also, make sure, once you light the pilot light, that it stays lit before powering up.  And finally, before the snowy season even starts, have your appliances checked out.

Once again, EMS took that woman who suffered the burns to the hospital.  No word yet on whether she has been released.
