The Lubbock Police Department announces they will be cracking down on drunk drivers over the holidays.

The police department says they always see a higher number of drunk drivers this time of year.  They say a lot of times thats because the people who wouldnt usually be out drinking, will be out celebrating the New Year.  So, they say they will have extra officers on duty; their sole purpose will be to patrol for drunk drivers.  Police say they are hoping to stop those drivers before they hurt themselves, or others.

"When we arrest a drunk driver, we realize that from the first point from when that person started in their car, to the point when we arrested them, a lot of peoples lives will be in danger.  And we would like to avoid that if we can,” says Lt. Greg Stevens, Spokesperson for the Lubbock Police Department.

The police department says it is very important to plan ahead.  They say you should make sure you have already decided on a designated driver before you head out on New Years Eve.  They say that way you can have a stress-free and safe evening.
