2007: A Year in Review

With 2008 just around the corner, KAMC 28 is looking back at the memorable stories of 2007.

In February, a few pelvic thrusts landed a traveling troupe of Chippendale dancers in jail; including the manager of Jakes Sports Café, where they were performing. All the madness ended with no charges against the Chips.

In March, a young woman, Rayshaun Parson, posed as a nurse and took baby Mychael Darthard-Dawado from Covenant Lakeside Hospital. The baby was found with Parson in Clovis, New Mexico. Parson plead guilty; and was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

From late March through the fall, City Hall had a few issues. First, there were two community-led efforts to oust City Councilmember Linda DeLeon from her seat. Also, City Councilmember Gary Boren resigned amid accusations he influenced hiring and firing within the city. And, City Chief of Staff, Dixon Platt, resigned after accusations he had behavioral issues; allegedly making sexist and racist comments.

In June, your smug mug could be caught on camera. Red light cameras were finally up and running. A first quarter report showed red light runners racked up about $268,000 in tickets.

It wasn’t all news that caught our eyes and ears. 2007 was action-packed weather-wise. Tulia suffered a tornado that blew in at over 100 miles per hour. And Seminole saw 90 mile an hour winds during a storm months later.

Lubbock had some home-grown heroes this summer. Our Lubbock Western All-Stars won their way to the title of “Third Best Little League Team” at the Little League World Series. They came home to many fans; and memories to last a lifetime.

Finally, November brought an awesome experience for Red Raider fans. Tech knocked Oklahoma out of contention for a national title; beating them 34 to 27. It was a game that sent a flood of fans on to the field to celebrate the big win. The victory certainly closed the year on a high note. And who knows, they may kick it off the same way. Tech plays the University of Virginia on New Years Day.
