The Texas Tech Residence Hall Association is hoping to raise awareness on campus about the Earthquake in Haiti.  They’ve spent the day taking donations and handing out ribbons… Hoping to remind students of the victims of the devastating earthquake.

Texas Tech Residence Hall Association Vice President of Programming Megan Forney just couldn’t sit by and do nothing for the victims in Haiti.

"The idea sprouted when I was watching the news.  I felt really impacted even though it was so far away.  I just felt like we needed to do something here at Tech.  I know Lubbock is doing the Lubbock Cares program and I felt like we needed to do something as a Texas Tech community," says Forney.

So Thursday and Friday, Megan and the rest of the Tech Residence Hall Association are taking donations to give to the Lubbock Red Cross relief effort and handing out ribbons on campus.

"The ribbons symbolize...  The red and blue is the Haiti flag and the yellow of course symbols hope.  We're handing them out to make awareness of this horrible tragedy that's going on," Forney said.

"It lets people know that there is something going on around campus and lets people know there is somewhere you can go donate.  People will ask questions and it brings awareness to them who maybe don't know.  Some of us college kids don't actually watch the news, so some people don't know what's going on and so it helps them realize," says Tech sophomore Angela Scioli.

Scioli isn’t one of those who doesn’t know what has happened in Haiti, though and she’s hoping that other students will take the time to help out those affected by the earthquake.

"I think it's important to donate because we're donating to something bigger than ourselves and we need to help those that are less fortunate because we are all very fortunate and very blessed with what we have."

The group will be on campus again tomorrow and they’re asking students to wear red Friday as a reminder of those survivors and victims of the earthquake.
