LISD Not Observing Martin Luther King Day

The
LISD officials say the school year schedule was pushed back after legislators decided the year couldn't start before August 27th. In addition, LISD had to book the United Spirit Arena for graduation years ago; so the last day of school couldn't be altered.
LISD had to change around vacation, so that the kids complete the correct amount of days in school. A committee of parents and administrators decided to have kids attend classes, since Martin Luther King Day fell so close to the Christmas break.
"We did visit with lots of leaders in our community before making that decision and asked for input from a variety of folks. And, I think everyone understood that this was not the first choice of LISD. But, it was the best case scenario given those parameters that were mandated to us,” says Nancy Sharp, spokesperson for LISD.
LISD says they plan on observing Martin Luther King Day as usual next year.
