GASLEAKcrash2008-01-10-1200022847.jpgA car crash in southwest Lubbock County caused a potentially deadly situation. The accident happened around 6:45 Thursday morning at FM179 near Woodrow Road. DPS troopers say the driver of the vehicle lost control, coming around the curve and went into a nearby field. The vehicle then struck a gas meter which began spewing natural gas. The driver was able to get out of the car and was taken to Covenant with only minor injuries. Atmos was called out and fixed the leak. Dan Alderson of Atmos says, "Natural gas is a very safe fuel, but it's still an explosive commodity, and so we still wanna be careful with that. When we talk about safety being our first priority we just wanna make the area safe as soon as possible." 36 homes were without gas power Thursday afternoon. Atmos had their gas back on by the end of the day.
