The flu virus has come to Lubbock in epic proportions, and both of Lubbock's hospitals are full to capacity.

"Our ER has seen the busiest season we've had in years and years," said Gwen Stafford, of Covenant Hospital.

"The waiting room is full. The emergency room is full. It's just taxing the system," said Dr. Christopher Piel, of University Medical Center.

Texas is one of ten states with widespread reports of influenza, but Dr. Piel says this is not an epidemic.

"This is the time when it peaks," said Dr. Piel. "The flu season usually starts in December but peaks in January or February, and it can run a couple more months."

But there are a few things you can do to reduce your risk.

"Get plenty of rest, balanced diet, plenty of fruits and vegetables," said Dr. Piel.

"If you wash you hands, get plenty of rest, and avoid exposure to the flu, those are the best things you can do."
