Red Light Cameras Voted Down

Red light cameras may be coming down after all. The Lubbock City Council voted four to three to get rid of the cameras.
Thursday was the first reading on the red light camera issue this time around. The company that installed the cameras will officially stop camera enforcement Friday.
The Council heard citizen comments and voted on whether or not to keep the cameras at Thursday’s meeting. This vote was on schedule after two citizen committees made recommendations to the council on the matter.
The Red Light Committee voted to take the cameras down in January. The Traffic Commission, however, voted to keep them up for another six months.
The cameras were installed in June but have been under close watch ever since. After a report came back showing the cameras were causing more accidents and were not generating revenue, the issue came back in front of city officials.
The cameras will be up for a second vote at the next council meeting, which is February 28th.
In the mean time, the company enforcing the cameras says all pending violations will still be processed.
