Tutors Needed at Literacy Lubbock

Fifty-four adults in Lubbock County are considered illiterate.
So now more than ever, those people are turning to the group Literacy Lubbock for help.
The organization matches adult students with volunteer tutors.
They teach courses in adult literacy, english as a second language, and special courses for dyslexia students.
They also help folks obtain their GED.
In 2007, more than seven hundred students took advantage of the free classes, and that means Literacy Lubbock is in dire need of more tutors.
"What we need is people, especially teachers, to come and help people like me because when we do something for other people you get blessed in return," said Dominga Vasquez.
As a child, Vasquez was a migrant worker and went to school for just one year.
When she began taking classes three years ago, Vasquez was tested at the second grade reading level.
Now she reads at the tenth grade level, and edging closer to obtaining her GED.
If you're interested in volunteering, there will be a training session at the community room of Mahon Library at 9 a.m. February 16.
