A new ethanol plant near Levelland will be up and running in about two weeks.

Construction on the Levelland-Hockley County Ethanol Plant started in October of 2006.  Ethanol acts as a substitute additive in gasoline.  However, processing the grain to make the ethanol also helps farmers in the area by allowing them to rotate crops.  Making ethanol also produces two by-products:  a high protein cattle feed and carbon dioxide, which is captured and sold to oil companies.

"As far as ethanol in the country, making this country less dependent on oil, no.  What it does though, is replace the MTE's that we're polluting. You need a component, an additive to go into the gas, and this does do that,” says Sam Sacco, General Manager of the Levelland-Hockley County Ethanol Plant.

The plant is expected to be fully operational March 13th.
