Former Lubbock realtor, Callie Long, will spend time in jail for her role in the death of a bicyclist.  However, she will be working-off her 60 day sentence on the weekends.

The Lubbock County Sheriff's Department says spending the weekends in jail is simply an alternative sentence.  Officials say it's a good way for someone to work-off their time, but still remain productive, since the person can hold down a job.

Officials say they have about 130 of these cases per month.  So, they say serving time on the weekends helps keep the burden off the jail system.  Officials say the jails would be far too crowded if everyone stayed for consecutive days.

"When an individual needs to be in jail, they will be sure that they are put in jail.  People who don't necessarily make a living out of being a criminal don't need that,” says Chief Deputy Paul Scarborough of the Lubbock County Sheriff’s Department.

Callie Long received five years probation for failing to stop and render aid after she hit bicyclist Brett Walrath in 2003.  The judge tacked on a 60 day jail sentence to her probation.
