City Sex Offender Ordinance

A new sex offender ordinance will be on the agenda during the next City Council meeting.
Mayor David Miller announced plans for the ordinance at a news conference Tuesday. The ordinance would overlap with state laws, targeting convicted child molesters who are not currently on probation or parole. It would require convicted offenders to live at least 1,000 feet away from places where kids gather, like schools or recreation centers.
This law would not affect child sex offenders already living within the city because that would require a person to possibly sell their home - perhaps unwillingly. And that may infringe on property rights. However, if the offender moved within the city again, they would have to abide by the ordinance.
