A weekend car crash in Southeast Lubbock took the life of a 1-year-old Slaton girl. On Monday, Slaton police released new information saying the infant had also been seriously injured before the wreck. The fatal accident happened on 66th St. and the East Slaton Hwy. Saturday night. Police say 22-year-old Ricardo Garcia was speeding down the road when 24-year-old Gernisha Flowers failed to yield the right of way turning onto 66th St. The cars collided and Garcia's car flipped. The force of the crash ejected 18-month-old Shiann Garcia and her uncle. Shiann later died. Slaton police say her father was rushing to a Lubbock hospital because he had just accidently backed over his daughter in the driveway, but Slaton Police Chief Royce Goodson says he should have called 911. He says, "If the family had called 911, EMS in Slaton could have responded in 3 to 5 minutes. That would have meant trained medical staff would have been there to attend to the injuries of the child ... I feel like if that had occurred most likely the child would be alive today." The results from an autopsy should show the magnitude of the baby's initial injuries, but for right now it appears she was alive when she left her home in Slaton.
Police will continue investigating these separate incidents..
