casa2008-04-02-1207189109.jpgCASA of the South Plains helped more than 900 foster children last year by providing court appointed advocates, but there were still 451 that needed the assistance.

Volunteer advocates make sure foster children are being provided for by foster parents and also speak on behalf of the child when it comes to returning them to the parent.

Amy Paiva of CASA said that a lack of volunteers is a serious problem and could leave many children at risk.

According to CASA's numbers, over the past several years, the South Plains region has seen a steady rise in child abuse cases.
The rise in cases means more volunteers are needed to be advocates.

"We always here that we rely on the next generation for our future," said Paiva. "Well, the next generation needs us. It's time to step up to the plate."
