IDALOUGIRLFOLO-VO2008-04-28-1209435599.jpgA 9-year-old Idalou girl dies after being hit by a car Friday afternoon. The family of Esmerelda Salinas says she died Sunday evening at Covenant. Witnesses say a car was speeding down the street and hit the little girl. The driver of the car, 22-year-old David Shane Johns, was arrested. Police say he could be charged with aggravated assault and/or manslaughter.

Esmerelda was one of six children and attended Idalou Elementary. Her family tells us she like to read and was active with basketball and other athletics. She was supposed to have her first game of the season Saturday. Everyone who knew Esmerlda says she was a friendly, warm-hearted young girl who always wanted to help. That's why her family decided to donate her organs, so even in her death, she can continue to help other children.

A memorial fund has been set up to help the family with funeral expenses. If you would like to donate you can do so at the Security Bank in Idalou under the name Esmerelda Salinas. For more information, you can call the bank at

892-2511.
