BIKES_GAS--vo2008-05-01-1209694784.jpgWith gas prices soaring, some are turning to bicycling as their new form of transportation, but cyclists say it may not be a safe way to get around the city. Bicycle shops all over town have been selling more commuter bikes than ever. But the City of Lubbock only has four striped bike lanes on major roads, totaling less than 8 miles. There are also bike routes, but theyre marked only by signs and arent separated from road traffic. Bicyclists are asking if Lubbock is really "bike-friendly." "I would say that today we could be alot more bike friendly," says Greg Davis of Defined Fitness Concepts. "Both in the recognition of cyclists by the drivers and the infrastructure itself needs to improve." Says Marsha Reed of the City of Lubbock, "We have wide enough streets to accomodate bicycles, and there are bicycle routes that are signed. Theyre not striped because if we get into striping then we start cutting out parking to residences and things like that."
