A Lubbock man is dead tonight after police say he tried to cross the Marsha Sharp Freeway and a car hit him.

Police say 26-year-old Thomas Jackson was walking across the westbound lanes near Quaker around 9:30 Monday night.  Police say there was no way the driver of a Chevy Denali could have seen Jackson walking across the road, and folks aren't even permitted to walk across the freeway.  Police say fatalities like this should never happen.
Cpl. Timothy Seeley with the LPD says, "It's highly preventable if pedestrians were to go down to the intersection where we do have lights up for traffic control and pedestrian control with cross walks, a lot of the accidents would be avoided."

The accident is still under investigation, but it appears the driver will not face charges.

They don't think alcohol was involved.
